Known as `the pearl of the Sahel`, Sousse lies on the eastern coast of Tunisia with the harbour area dating back 2500 years. Of course much has changed in and around the area since and today Sousse is probably more vibrant than any other holiday resort in Tunisia. The medina offers many small shops in the cobbled streets and alleyways and it is a popular holiday destination for both Europeans and Tunisians alike.
The fantastic white sandy beach of Boujaffar stretches all the way through Sousse and onto Port el Kantaoui, which is 10km (6 miles) away. Most of it is open to the public, although some areas are private for the hotels.
There are many historical attractions in Sousse including the 9th century Great Mosque, 8th century ribat (fortress), the Archaeological Museum and the Avenue des Catacombes, which are 3.5 miles of tunnels under the city. There are several bars and nightclubs in Sousse and plenty of restaurants on the beach and in the town.

There is plenty on offer in Sousse to keep the children happy. For the younger ones the golden sandy beaches, gently sloping into the clean sea, are perfect for paddling while the Museum of Kalaat el-Koubba shows life in the medina of old. The ribat offers great views from the watchtowers and in the nearby resort of Port el Kantaoui has amusement parks.
For the older children and teenagers there is a wide selection of watersports on offer, including wind surfing, jet skis, waterskiing and paragliding.
