Translated into English, Arguineguin means `quiet water` and has kept it`s original Canary fishing port charm from years gone by, being a lot smaller and quieter than it`s neighbour Puerto Rico. Arguineguin is not a top beach holiday spot, rather a quiet harbour base, with easy access to the good beaches nearby. A relaxing stroll around the resort is enjoyable, with good fish restaurants, narrow streets and a distinct Canarian feel.
It is suitable for walkers to hike over the mountain which separates Arguineguin from Puerto Rico. Arguineguin also makes an excellent base for moving inland and touring Gran Canaria by hire car.
One of the largest markets in the south of Gran Canaria is held in Arguineguin every Tuesday.
